Among the Environment Directorate’s (ED) core objectives include enhancing the quality of life in Somali community by protecting and improving the region’s natural resources in a sustainable, innovative, inclusive, and industry-leading way while fostering green-growth, a thriving more sustainable economy and healthy communities. ED is concerned with the issues of environmental protection in Somali Region. It is responsible for developing policies covering environmental protection, nature conservation; enforcing environmental legislation; monitoring environmental quality; providing collection, transfer, treatment and disposal facilities for many types of waste; advising on the environmental implications of town planning and new policies; handling pollution complaints and incidents; and raising awareness and support in the community for environmental initiatives. The directorate currently conducts EIAs in the areas of road and transport, oil and natural gas fields and the mining. The latter two has yielded substantial revenues to the local community in the form of monetary compensation
