National Green Development Action Program or Green Legacy Initiative, which was launched in 2019 by Prime Minster Abiyi Ahmed that aims to curb the effects of climate change and deforestation in Ethiopia to plant 20 billion trees in four years across the country. In the first phase of GLI, Ethiopia targeted to plant 20 billion seedlings and yet achieved planting 25 billion including forest, agroforest and fruit seedlings. In the next four years (second phase 2023/2024), it is planned to plant 25 billion seedlings in different agro-ecologies. In relation to this Somali regional state were planned to plant 37,380,917 at first phase of green legacy program and achieved 23,705,968 including forest, agroforest and fruit seedlings.
