On December 10, 2025, Jigjiga University officially launched an International Conference on Environmental Research and Climate Change–Induced Migration in East Africa, bringing together regional leadership and high-level researchers from Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Uganda.
The opening ceremony was attended by senior regional officials, including Dr. Hussein Kasim, and H.E. Eng. Muhyadin Abdi, Bureau Head of the SRS Environmental Protection and Rural Land Administration Bureau (SRS.EPRLAB), alongside distinguished experts from across the region.
The conference was opened on behalf of Jigjiga University by Dr. Musa Mohamed, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who emphasized the University’s strong commitment to leading evidence-based research that addresses migration challenges driven by climate change.
The event was officially inaugurated by Dr. Hussein Kasim, Head of the Office of the President of the Somali Regional State, who highlighted the urgent need for a unified, research-driven approach to managing climate-induced migration in the region.
Key opening remarks were delivered by prominent experts, including Prof. Habtamu Wendimu and Ms. Angela Rosa from the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). They shared global and regional perspectives on climate-related migration and the policy responses required to address the issue effectively.
The conference marks a strong beginning for in-depth discussions focused on practical solutions and effectiveness, and it is graciously hosted by Jigjiga University.
