The Environmental Protection and Rural Land Administration Bureau of the Somali Regional State has today successfully hosted a high-level forum in Jigjiga focusing on climate outlook and the impacts of climate change in the Somali Region.

The forum brought together senior regional leaders, led by the Head of the President’s Office, Hussein Hashi (Ph.D), alongside the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somaliland, Abdullahi Jama Osman (Geeljire). Participants also included regional and city administrations, government and non-governmental institutions operating in the region, Jigjiga University, and other distinguished guests.

The forum provided a comprehensive overview of the impacts of climate change observed across different periods, while also presenting strategic directions for future mitigation and adaptation efforts. Discussions emphasized strengthening nationally aligned initiatives, particularly the Green Legacy Initiative, and enhancing efforts to prevent deforestation and environmental degradation.

In their remarks, Hussein Hashi (Ph.D) and the Head of the Environmental Protection and Rural Land Administration Bureau, Eng. Muhyadin Abdi Hussein, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing climate change through practical and sustainable measures. These include reducing reliance on fuel-powered vehicles and agricultural irrigation engines, promoting electric mobility, and expanding the use of solar energy solutions among farming communities.

The forum concluded with a shared understanding among all stakeholders on the importance of coordinated action to address climate change and to strengthen resilience against its impacts across the region.
